Vuelta a España 2026: Matthew Brennan completes a hat-trick in Lorca, Van Aert extends his lead in the points classification
On paper this Vuelta's last pure sprint chance, and that's exactly how it played out: Matthew Brennan (Visma-Lease a Bike) beat Bryan Coquard and Jordi Meeus in Lorca for his third stage win of this race, adding to earlier victories in Manosque and Roquetes — the first rider to manage that on a Grand Tour debut since Tadej Pogačar in 2019. Teammate Wout van Aert hoovered up every sprint point along the way to extend his green jersey lead, even though he had to settle for fifth in the sprint itself. Enric Mas came home safely in the bunch to keep his red jersey, still 1:18 clear of Primož Roglič and 1:39 clear of Felix Gall. The full story of stage 11, the GC after eleven stages, and a look ahead to the mountains' return in stage 12.
Two escape attempts, both reeled back in
Over the 156.1 kilometres from Cartagena to Lorca, a four-man breakaway formed early: Alessandro Covi, Domen Novak and Ethan Hayter rode clear, with Sinuhé Fernández bridging across to complete the quartet. They were never allowed much more than a minute's lead, and well before halfway the escape had already been shut down.
That wasn't the last word on breakaways, though: Hayter tried again around 75 kilometres from the line, this time alongside Larry Warbasse. The pair built a gap of roughly thirty seconds and Hayter picked up the intermediate sprint along the way, before they were caught on the day's only categorised climb, a third-category rise 33.5 kilometres from the finish. From there it stayed together, with the sprinters' teams — Visma-Lease a Bike foremost among them — firmly in charge.
Brennan wins his third stage, Van Aert sweeps the points
In the closing kilometres Visma-Lease a Bike delivered a flawless lead-out, with Wout van Aert peeling off last to launch Matthew Brennan. The 21-year-old Briton had little trouble holding off Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Jordi Meeus (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), timed together with the rest of the first group in 3:17:18. It's his third stage win of this Vuelta, following earlier victories in Manosque (stage 2) and Roquetes (stage 5) — making him the first rider to win three stages on a Grand Tour debut since Tadej Pogačar did it in 2019, also at the Vuelta. Van Aert himself had to settle for fifth in the sprint, but had already swept every point on offer earlier in the day, at both the intermediate sprint and the finish, extending his lead in the points classification.
The stage 11 result
Behind Brennan, Coquard and Meeus, Magnus Cort, Wout van Aert, Hugo Hofstetter, Bastien Tronchon, Alessandro Romele, Matevž Govekar and Orluis Aular rounded out the top ten — all given the same time as the winner.
The general classification after eleven stages
With the favourites all coming home in the same bunch, the general classification is unchanged: Enric Mas remains the leader, 1:18 ahead of Primož Roglič and 1:39 ahead of Felix Gall. Oscar Onley is fourth at 2:20, ahead of Richard Carapaz (+3:26), Mattias Skjelmose (+3:55), Sepp Kuss (+4:09), Harold Tejada (+4:39), Gregor Mühlberger (+7:33) and Jakob Omržel (+8:05). The jerseys stay with the same riders too: Mas in red, Van Aert — even more comfortable after today's points haul — in green, Santiago Buitrago in the mountains jersey, and Oscar Onley leading the young rider classification.
