The longest and toughest mountain stage of this Giro sent the peloton over a long string of cols before the uphill finish at Piancavallo had the final say.
Eleven kilometres that changed everything
With eleven kilometres to go, Vingegaard accelerated and immediately rode clear. Nobody got anywhere near him: his fifth stage win of this Giro, and pretty much overall victory too.
Behind him, Derek Gee-West, Jai Hindley and Felix Gall sprinted together for the scraps, 1'15" down on the winner — a trio that would go on to fill out the rest of the podium in Rome.
A day after Kuss's unique feat
Piancavallo followed the dramatic stage to Alleghe, where Sepp Kuss won solo to complete his own collection of stage wins across all three Grand Tours. Two consecutive days with storylines that would overshadow the rest of this Giro.
