A flat opener along the Galician coast ended in a bunch sprint, won by Lotte Kopecky to launch her hunt for the green jersey.

A rolling run into Santiago de Compostela again came down to a sprint, with Kopecky doubling up.

A hilly stage to Lugo went to a breakaway, with young French talent Marion Bunel timing her effort perfectly.

The first real climbing test, into the hills around A Fonsagrada, went to home rider Paula Blasi.

The race's only stage outside Galicia, a transition into Castile and LeΓ³n, ended once more in a sprint for Kopecky.

The first-ever summit finish, on the wall of Les Praeres de Nava β nearly four kilometres at 13.5% β went to Anna van der Breggen, who took the leader's jersey.

History was made on the first-ever women's ascent of the Alto de l'Angliru, where Paula Blasi distanced her rivals to win the stage and seal overall victory.
